A documentary I watched in high school got me interested in rural Japan. How can people keep living in Japan's farming villages? Wanting to learn that, I studied community development and social welfare in rural areas at university. In my third year of university (2010), I took a leave of absence and moved to Mimasaka, Okayama, to experience rural life firsthand. Ueyama, where I'm based, was famous for its terraced rice fields, but abandoned farmland was increasing and restoration had just begun. Today I help restore the terraced fields in Ueyama while living here and making charcoal, a craft I learned in this village. I'll keep making charcoal and hope to increase the number of people who want to live here and keep living here. As someone who lives in Ueyama and keeps making charcoal, I'll be your guide when you visit.
