Yoshimi Hyakkei is a group of large-scale horizontal tomb caves, the largest in Japan, created about 1400 years ago during the Kofun period. Currently, 219 horizontal tomb caves are known, and they were designated a national historic site in the Taisho era.

Each of the yokoana (horizontal tomb chambers) was created by digging several meters into the rocky mountain and is divided into two sections: an entrance and a rear chamber. The appeal lies in the fact that you can actually enter these yokoana and experience the atmosphere of the Kofun period firsthand.

Some of the yokoana were apparently used as munitions factories during the war. For this reason, they are also known as valuable historical remains that tell the story of wartime history.
