What kind of place is Kamigori Town?
JR Kamigori Station can be reached in about 30 minutes by train from JR Himeji Station. A large part of the town is mountainous, and it is characterized by its lush natural riverside scenery and old-fashioned townscape. Surrounded by relatively low mountains, the area gets cold in winter but doesn't accumulate much snow, making it a popular destination for cyclists every year.
Furthermore, with the recent buzz around opening cafes in renovated old folk houses and people moving from urban areas to rural regions, an increasing number of individuals are relocating to Agou Town to start new businesses or are working remotely from Agou Town.

However, it's also true that there are still many lesser-known places to visit in Kamigori. Therefore, this article will thoroughly explore the charms of Kamigori, from experiences that families can enjoy to cafes popular with locals!
*This article reflects information as of September 2025. Business hours and other details may change in the future. Please be sure to check the official websites, social media, or other channels of each spot before visiting.*

Immerse yourself in the sake brewery atmosphere at Gallery Higashikura
"Gallery Higashi-gura" is a former sake brewery that has been renovated into a gallery. It hosts music events, art exhibitions, workshops, and also has a cafe attached.
Once you step inside the gallery, the sake brewery's atmosphere is so perfectly preserved that it will send any alcohol lover's spirits soaring. It's equipped with a stage, so concerts and live performances are apparently held there regularly.

Furthermore, the adjacent cafe offers a nostalgic and heartwarming space. Friendly staff will greet you, and the menu features a selection of dishes where you can fully savor Kami-gun's local specialties, such as brown rice pizza, amazake gelato, and moringa cake.

"Minasaka Falls," a mystical spot surrounded by primeval forest.

Source:Taki-pedia
"Kaisaka Falls" in Asahi, Kamigori Town. It is a two-tiered waterfall consisting of a male and female cascade, each about 6 meters high, nestled in a tranquil environment surrounded by virgin forest. It is a place where history and faith breathe, having once been used by ascetics for purification rituals, and the remains of their huts can still be found.
About a 50-minute walk from Kogenawa Station on the Chizu Line. Just a short journey away, a mystical scene unfolds before your eyes, far removed from everyday life.
The charm lies in enjoying the seasonal expressions: fresh greenery in spring, the refreshing sound of water in summer, vibrant autumn leaves in fall, and the crisp air in winter. Standing before the waterfall, you'll feel a special sense of having discovered your own private hideaway.
The community has continued to protect this waterfall, and it's also a precious place of relaxation for the locals. For visitors, it's a spot that offers a healing time to connect with nature.
Please be sure to experience the unique offerings of Kamigōri Town, where history and nature are interwoven.

It's also recommended for children's summer vacation free studies! Since the finished product varies from person to person, you can get a piece that you can cherish and use for a long time.

Experience interacting with incredibly cute goats at Torai Yagi Farm.
"ToraiyaGi Farm," run by Tsuyoshi Okabe, a member of the Kamigori Town Regional Promotion Volunteer Program, offers an experience where visitors can feed and interact with six white goats. Okabe, who previously worked for a major pharmaceutical company, decided he wanted to move to a more relaxed place during the COVID-19 pandemic. He then moved to Kamigori, a town with vast land, abundant nature, and a place where goats can live freely.
We offer goat interaction experiences at various locations such as local markets and events, and our six goats have become like local idols. In April, we plan to open a ranch in a larger space, allowing more people to enjoy feeding and interacting with the goats.
Furthermore, products such as cheese, pudding, and sweets made with goat's milk are also in development. They aim to make these local specialties of Kamigōri!

Special camping time to experience at BAMPO Camp Site

Nestled within the rich natural surroundings of Kamigōri,BAMPO Camp SiteYou can experience two plans with the theme of "creating with your own hands"!
The guide is Saidon, a born traveler who has been journeying around the world since his university days.
From crossing America to navigating the Amazon River and wandering through Mexico, with the motto "We make our own place" gained from these rich experiences, we have poured our efforts into creating a living space together with our friends.
Currently, I am also involved in renovating old houses and operating campgrounds, and my life's work is to create "places that remind people of their origins," where they can live by touching the earth, feeling the wind, and sharpening their five senses.
The first plan you can experience with Saido-don is,"Building from Scratch! An Experience in Developing a Campsite Where You Can Even Use Heavy Machinery"
Standing on undeveloped land, we'll use heavy machinery for leveling and shape the campsite with our own hands.
The smell of the earth, the feeling of moving your body, the passion of working together with comrades.
Gathering around a fire in a completed space brings a special sense of accomplishment and reminds us of the feeling of "being alive."
Another is a craft experience using natural materials.Crafting Camping Gear from Bamboo
You will split bamboo, shave it, and polish it to create unique bamboo chopsticks, bamboo cups, and bamboo bento boxes with your own hands.
The comfort of handmade work, the warmth of the materials, the joy of actually using the finished tools—
It's a time when the "purity of creation" that you'd forgotten suddenly comes back to you.
Because it is Saiton, who has experienced a diverse "sense of living" through travel, they can deliver
The experience of "creating leads to the joy of living."
Facing nature, using your hands, and rediscovering your senses.
Please come and experience such a rich and heartwarming time in Kamigori!

An experience where you can enjoy a moment of "feeling the taiko drums with your body."

"Taiko Drumming Workshop" by husband and wife team Takeshi Maeda and Maya Minowa, which you can experience in the mountainous region of Kami-gun.
Not only can you experience the breathtaking performance of these two professional musicians, active both domestically and internationally, up close, but you can also enjoy a special moment of actually playing the drums and "feeling their resonance with your body." The vibrations transmitted the moment you grip the drumsticks, the powerful wave of sound that echoes through the mountains and valleys, and the comforting feeling of your rhythm merging with that of your companions – it is a dynamic experience that can only be savored in nature.
It's an experience where everyone naturally gets engrossed by synchronizing their breaths and layering their sounds.
After finishing playing the taiko drums, there's no doubt you'll be left with a wondrous sense of comfort, a blend of the lingering resonance that echoes deep within your body and the natural breeze.
Furthermore, as an option,Making Your Own Drumsticks
You can also experience it. The process of carving and polishing wood, creating a piece that fits comfortably in your hand, offers a different kind of enjoyment from playing.
Experience a time in Kamigori where sound, body, and friends become one, set against the backdrop of a mountain village landscape!

Source:Kamigori Town Homepage
This facility was established in the birthplace of "Otori Keisuke," a prominent figure in Japan's modernization, as a multi-purpose community space that also exhibits materials related to Otori Keisuke.
Keisuke Otori, a native of Kamigori Town, was a man of diverse talents who served as a soldier, politician, diplomat, and scholar, active from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. He fought for the Shogunate forces in the Boshin War, and after the Meiji Restoration, he served the new government, holding positions such as Commissioner of the Hokkaido Development Commission and Minister to Korea, making significant contributions to Japan's modernization.
Inside the building, there are exhibits where you can learn in detail about Keisuke Otori's life and achievements, and it is also utilized as a place for local historical learning. It also serves as a place for interaction with local people, making it a spot where you can deeply understand the history and culture of Kamigori Town.

"Shirahatake Castle Ruins (National Historic Site), a historical site associated with the renowned general Akamatsu Enshin (also known as Akamatsu Enshin) of the Nanboku-cho period."

Source:Hyogo Prefecture Official Tourism Site
This is the site of a mountain castle built in 1336 by Akamatsu Enshin, who rebelled against the Kenmu regime alongside Ashikaga Takauji, on the steep Mount Shirahatayama.
Located on the summit of the steep Shirahata-yama mountain at an altitude of 440 meters, it is known as a valuable mountain castle with a large scale of terraced fortifications extending 470 meters in total length. Within an area of approximately 560 meters east-west and 400 meters north-south, many remains such as the main keep, second bailey, third bailey, Kushihashi-maru, Babamaru, as well as earthworks and moats, are well-preserved.
This castle is a formidable mountain fortress, virtually impregnable, that withstood the siege of a 60,000-strong army led by Nitta Yoshisada for over 50 days. It is also known for providing the turning point for a counterattack. It is a legendary castle that, according to records, has never fallen.
Today, it is also revered as a sacred site for prayer for academic success, known as the "Unfallable Castle." "Unfallable Castle, Shirahata Castle" amulets for passing exams are sold at the tourist information center in front of Sanyō Main Line Akō Station and at the Akamatsu Community Center. There is also a vending machine at the foot of the mountain (exclusively for five 100-yen coins).
The hiking trail to the summit is also well-maintained, making it a spot where you can enjoy a nature walk while feeling a sense of historical romance.
Access: Approximately 30 minutes on foot from Chizukyu Railway Kounohara-Enshin Station (to the trailhead)
Approximately 40 minutes from the trailhead to the summit.
Address: Akamatsu, Kamigori-cho, Ako-gun, Hyogo Prefecture, 678-1273
Nearest station: Kōnohara Enshin Station
"Kounohara Enshin Station," which is also the name of a Chizu Express station, is named in honor of Akamatsu Enshin, a samurai who was active from the Kamakura period to the Nanboku-cho period (and who later became a monk and took the name Enshin). This tells us that this region is a place associated with Akamatsu Enshin.
Savor the flavors of Kamigori! Featuring cafes and cake shops where you can also enjoy lunch.
Merry Widow
MERRY WIDOW is a patisserie and cafe located about a 5-minute walk north of JR Ako Station. It's popular for its stylish interior and sweets that are as delightful to look at as they are to taste, as well as a rich cafe menu including coffee. They reportedly use plenty of fresh, locally sourced eggs for their puddings and custards, and their confectionery making prioritizes a sense of balance to best utilize the quality of their ingredients.

For souvenirs, we recommend the "Butter Sand." You can enjoy two flavors, rum raisin and espresso, and it's characterized by a rich yet not overly sweet taste. It's a great cake shop loved by locals, perfect for enjoying cake or lunch menus in-store, or for taking home beautiful cakes and sweets for the whole family to enjoy.

The warmth of the local community is the charm of Kōri.
So far, we've introduced recommended spots in Kamigori, but the "people" of the region are also one of Kamigori Town's charms. At the "Fureai Kissa" (Community Cafe) that the author visited during reporting, we were able to feel the warmth of the local residents of Kamigori.
"Fureai Kissa" is a place that reuses a former kindergarten building as a diner. They sell a morning set for an incredible 200 yen, and it's not just a diner, but a bustling place of relaxation where local people gather. Fureai Kissa is open on the first and third Fridays of the month from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and they also sell local produce.
Venue: Kura district, Hometown Village Development Council

Conclusion
How was it? Until I actually visited, I only had a vague impression, but Kamigori was a wonderful town, packed with charm in its food, people, and experiences. Won't you consider choosing Kamigori for your next outing?
