What is the appeal of uninhabited islands and remote islands in the first place?

An uninhabited island is an island where no one lives or where visits are temporarily restricted.

Because so much untouched nature remains, you can fully enjoy the natural environment at your leisure, and it's also perfect for marine sports enthusiasts as there's no need to worry about crowds. Furthermore, because readily available food and entertainment are scarce, it also offers an aspect where you can realize the blessings of everyday life.

10 Recommended Uninhabited and Remote Islands in the Kanto Region

Sarushima

Sarushima, the only uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay. It is about a 15-minute ferry ride from Mikasa Terminal, located a 15-minute walk from Keikyu Line "Yokosuka-Chuo Station."

When you actually land, you can feel the rich natural environment and the history of its role as a "military fortress to protect Tokyo" firsthand. There are also exploration tours led by guides who know Sarushima inside out, allowing for a deeper understanding of its history.

On the south side of the island, there is also a sandy beach, so you can enjoy barbecues and swimming in the sea during the summer.

Jogashima

Located at the southernmost tip of the Miura Peninsula, Jogashima is the largest island in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is famous for the "Umanose Doomon" (Horse's Back Cave), which has been carved by the sea over many years.

There are many tourist attractions such as parks, beaches, and shrines, and you can enjoy barbecues on the beach. The convenience of being able to visit empty-handed is also a great appeal, as they offer equipment rentals and food sales.

Niijima

A three-hour boat ride from Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, brings you to Niijima, one of the Izu Islands. The climate is slightly warmer than Tokyo's, but the sea breeze makes it more comfortable than the sweltering heat of the city.

It's perfect for surfers as powerful waves crash in from the Pacific. Surfboard and bodyboard lessons and rental shops are also available, so even beginners can enjoy themselves with peace of mind.

Hachijojima

Hachijojima, which can be reached from XX by one large passenger ship per day or three flights per day. Evidence of human habitation dating back to the Jomon period has been confirmed at multiple archaeological sites.

The island has a campsite equipped with hot showers, changing rooms, and cooking areas, and its well-maintained facilities are popular with campers. Many visitors also come to the island specifically for its hot springs, as there are numerous hot spring facilities available for a low entrance fee.

Chichijima

After a 24-hour journey from Tokyo's Takeshiba Pier aboard the regular ferry "Ogasawara Maru," you arrive at Chichijima. Because it is located far from the mainland, it is also the island where whale watching was first introduced in Japan.

At night, tours are held to see creatures that have undergone unique evolutions, which the whole family can enjoy. However, camping is prohibited on Chichijima, so be sure to use accommodation facilities.

Okinoshima

Located south of Chiba Prefecture, Okinoshima was formed by uplift during the Great Kanto Earthquake. With a circumference of about 1 km and an area of approximately 4.6 hectares, it is a considerably small island compared to other remote islands.

The small cove, about 30 meters deep, is also popular as a snorkeling spot, and after the tide recedes, you can enjoy tide pooling to search for rare creatures.

Aijima

Aijima, once known as the "Island of Rendezvous" for lovers. It's relatively easy to access, located just a 10-minute walk from Tomiura Station on the JR Uchibo Line.

Nearby are Toyooka Beach and Tafusa Cape, and during fishing season, many anglers visit this island seeking species like whiting and horse mackerel.

Kamogawa Matsushima

Kamogawa Matsushima, comprised of seven islands of varying sizes, has been selected as one of the New Japan's Top 100 Scenic Views.

The beauty of the sunrise, sunset, and night view from Uomizuka Observatory is breathtaking no matter where you look. There are two parking lots nearby, and you can drive up to the observatory's stairs.

Sanshirō Island

Sanshirojima, located approximately 200 meters offshore from Shizuoka Prefecture.

It is known for the "tombolo phenomenon," where it becomes land-connected at low tide, appearing as if the sea has parted. During this time, numerous tide pools emerge, and the charm lies in observing various creatures such as fish and crustaceans.

Benten Island

Bentenjima, known as a resort area, is located in Hamana Lake, famous in Shizuoka. A grand torii gate, standing 18 meters tall, serves as the symbol of tourism.

The shallow sandy beach stretches for miles, and the waves are relatively calm, making it a popular clam-digging spot where large clams can be found, attracting many tourists every year.
