It's a shame to just visit tourist spots. I want to have a stylish experience on Awaji Island!
Experience the history of Awaji Island's roof tiles and choose your own coaster design!?
About 1.5 hours from Osaka by car, the experience location is "GALLERY TsuchizaArrived at the location. Climbing the stairs, the entrance immediately appears, showcasing an abundance of roof tiles. Inside, there are many small items and accessories made with roof tiles! Just looking at them makes you excited.

First, momo, our local friend (the person who will guide us through making tile coasters) for this experience, greeted us. After momo, who has been familiar with roof tiles since childhood, lectured us on the history of Awaji Island roof tiles, we chose the design we wanted to engrave on our tile coasters. There were so many designs that it was hard to choose, but I selected the "chrysanthemum" pattern.

By the way, they also said it's possible to make it with an original design. They recommended bringing a draft beforehand, so I'm thinking of preparing my favorite pattern for next time...!
A moment of clearing the mind and just carving patterns onto the tile coasters.
Once the pattern is decided, place the draft on the coaster and trace it with a pencil. Since there were many repeating patterns, I lost track of where I had drawn up to partway through, but I managed to transfer the entire draft.

After that, we'll finally start carving the coasters with the spatula.
Actually, we don't just use one type of spatula! We use several different spatulas, switching between them to carve the transferred pattern. This work is incredibly intricate and meticulous; I got so engrossed in carving that I even forgot to chat.

Especially the chrysanthemum painting I chose was relentlessly detailed, and I almost lost my will to continue (lol). Finally reaching the end and finishing it brought an incomparable sense of accomplishment.
Finally finished after two hours! I'm so excited for how it will turn out in a week!
After about two hours from arrival, the coaster was completed by finally tidying up the edges. Momo-san instructed me on which spatula to use and how to proceed for easier carving, so even I, who was not accustomed to using spatulas, was able to enjoy the experience.

It was fired and finished in about a week, and arrived at my house a few days later! These coasters are characterized by their high absorbency because, unlike others, they are made from roof tile material.
Having an experience from Awaji Island remain in your hands, the memories of your trip to Awaji Island will come flooding back every time you use the coaster!
In conclusion
How was it?
Beyond typical tourism activities like visiting attractions and buying souvenirs, I had the precious opportunity to experience something I made on my trip being delivered to me later. It's a new way to enjoy Awaji Island where you can also feel its history!
